Vanilla Bean is a kind of orchid, seen growing up this tree.

Chinese clumping bamboo, including a bamboo shoot (you eat those all the time in Chinese food) -- see it growing up like a giant asparagus shoot.
This plant was once nearly extinct (there were no known living plants anywhere) when one of the staff from the NTBG found one on a hiking expedition in the early 1990s. They have since nurtured them, and they are so proliferous now that they can be purchased as house plants in Europe.
These gardens are listed as one of National Geographic Traveler's top 50 sites in the world to visit. We agree!
